An Easy and Simple Big Apple Crumb Cake

An Easy and Simple Big Apple Crumb Cake

For some reason, whenever I eat a big apple like a Granny Smith or an apple pie, the mental image that pops into my head is of a huge, multi-layered, sweet and syrupy cake. Maybe it’s because I’m from Ohio (home of the world’s biggest apple), or maybe it’s all due to my love of cinnamon bread desserts. Either way, I’ve always had the impression that a big apple cake is meant to be shared with others, and not merely enjoyed on its own. In my mind, a big apple cake is the perfect desert for a special occasion, like a birthday, graduation, or wedding.

Crumb to cake ratio. At my favorite pastry shop, each layer of an apple pie has a crumb in it. The suggestion to top with crushed sugar isn’t particularly appealing to me, since the thought is that you should only top with sugar. After having to sit on the counter for the cake to cool down fully, or at least have time to let it cool down, the old-fashioned recipe says that it can only be covered, and then stored on the shelf, or in the fridge. However, by adding a tasty topping to the big apple crumb cake, such as cinnamon, chocolate, or fruit extracts, you can make the traditional dessert into a delicious, nutritious, and attractive centerpiece for your next big party.

To make a big apple crumb cake, start out by grilling the unadorned slices of apple until they are almost completely tender. Then, use a food processor or a blender to puree the grilling apples into a smooth paste. Add some brown sugar and cinnamon powders, if you want, to give the finished cake a bit of a kick. If desired, drizzle over a little bit of white icing over the cake, and it will be delicious enough for you to serve.

As for the recipe for this delicious big apple crumb cake, it starts out by mixing together some butter and some unsalted dried apples. Wait a minute or two to allow the apples to soften a bit, then add some lemon juice, some brown sugar, and a pinch of cinnamon. Once you’ve mixed everything together, fold in the crumbs.

It is important to note that baking applesauce ensures that your cake comes out perfectly cooked. Although the apple pieces can be cooked alone if you wish (a method not recommended if you are going to be presenting this cake at a child’s birthday party), it is the addition of the wet ingredients that thicken the batter. Once you have mixed all of the wet ingredients together, you simply spread them over the dry cake batter. You do have to make sure that you do not over bake the apples because they will start to curdle in the wetness, but you should still allow the cake to bake for about 1 hour and a half, just to ensure the apples have finished their maturation.

Baking your own cake with applesauce isn’t difficult, but you’ll need to make sure that you have the right apples and brown sugar. The brown sugar just makes the cake taste better, and it gives it a more authentic look than either white or brown sugar can give. Once you have finished the cake, simply spoon it into small airtight plastic bags and place it into your freezer for about an hour before you frost it. In the rare event that you want to eat the cake right away, place it in the fridge and freeze until you’re ready to eat.
